Seven Lanterns

This contemporary waterfront home is rooted in a site held by the same family for generations. The residence translates this long personal history into an architecture oriented toward expansive views of the lake, the skyline, the Cascade Mountains, and Mount Rainier.

Set into a steep hillside, the house is entered through a narrow, covered passage that opens to a landscaped circular auto court and a hovering porte cochere. An upturned butterfly roof and illuminated entry monitor create a strong sense of arrival, while layered elements of greenery and patterned art glass mediate between privacy and transparency.

The plan spans the width of the lot, providing panoramic water views from all primary living spaces. Multiple terraces—including a roof terrace off the primary bedroom—support year-round indoor–outdoor living. Designed equally for hosting large gatherings and pursuing personal passions, the home includes spaces for garden events as well as a dedicated workshop for vintage automobile restoration. From the water, seven glowing lanterns atop concrete pylons identify the house as a quiet shoreline landmark.
